In her “Jewel Box Kitchen,” Kristen Peña of K Interiors engaged TBC Plaster Artisans to give her walls a sumptuous shine with a high-gloss Venetian plaster using Benjamin Moore’s Townsend Harbor Brown. The first decade of the plan pairs the new hospital with a research and academic building that is expected to open in 2028 on the western edge of the campus. A focus on bespoke lighting seemed to flip the switch on minimalist styling in a shift toward more opulence and abstract design. For her bathroom, Mill Valley–based designer Holly A. Kopman worked with artist Bobby Sarnoff and Dogfork Lamp Arts to develop a custom chandelier in homage to a Mazzega-designed lighting fixture she’d been obsessed with. “I thought this would be the perfect place for it,” she says of the water-jet-cut and baked-glass fixture made of interlocking C-shapes they’ve been prototyping for the last year. Twenty-eight intrepid interior and landscape design firms took up residence in the 11,155-square-foot home on “Billionaire’s Row” in Pacific Heights to transform the recognizable property into a showplace for modern living.

While there are certainly more than what we covered on this list, we think these six have the best collections and exhibitions of all. In the grand hallway, Berry selected a sculptural light installation called “Sand & Sea–Cascading Waves” from London-based design studio Haberdashery. For the primary bedroom, Peruri selected a curvaceous Selene pendant lamp by Elsa Foulon to drop from the center of the space. And in the “Vaulted Jewel” bathroom off the main kitchen, Stephanie Marsh Fillbrandt of Marsh & Clark Design selected an antique patinated brass leaf chandelier to hang in contrast to the bright white subway tiles. Cultural significance aside, the real stars are the designers whose interior concepts not only reimagined every space in the stately home, but also help to predict the next big trends in design. And for one top San Francisco–based design firm, it meant reprising a role it played 35 years ago.

Exhibitions always tackle interesting topics from unexpected angles, be it a Hanukkah-timed neon exhibit curated by a female-owned collective, or exhibitions spotlighting Jewish figures like The Muppets creator Frank Oz or Leonard Cohen. Naturally, there’s a deli on site serving pastrami sandwiches and matzo ball soup, if intellectual stimulation makes you hungry. Come for the impressive architecture (the museum recently added new, stunning spaces to its floor plan), stay for the impressive Asian art and artifact collections and exhibitions by renowned artists like Takashi Murakami. Some of the best exhibits at the beautiful museum, which is easy to get lost in, are thematic groupings dedicated to gender, power and religion. For a relatively small city, San Francisco boasts a surprisingly high count of world-class art museums, catering to modernity lovers, antiquity enthusiasts and classic appreciators alike.
The number of applicants has more than doubled since 2022, with the next academy class expected to be the largest in over two years. Friedman Benda (New York/Los Angeles) will be presenting a group exhibition that highlights LA-based design practices, while Moderne Gallery (Philadelphia) will showcase rare and important works by George Nakashima. Influential galleries will be bringing their A-game to the launch of Design Miami LA, with most of them showcasing a range of new works from notable artists and makers.
“It was only my second showcase ever, and it was at the very end of the wow-wow ’80s,” says AD100 designer Suzanne Tucker, cofounder of Tucker & Marks Design, who tackled the home’s dining room with an over-the-top formality in its original Showcase premier. History repeats itself with the return of the San Francisco Decorator Showcase, which debuts its 45th edition this month. Open to the public from April 27 through May 27, the ticketed event takes place within the historic 125-year-old Dutch colonial mansion was previously the event’s venue in 1989, and while interior design trends have changed, the high caliber of talent has not.
